Cochineal lice (also cochineal and Latin: Coccus Cacti) are silvery grey, dried female lice that produce a natural bright red dye, carmine, which can be used as a pigment and for dyeing textiles. Until the discovery of synthetic dyes such as fuchsin in the 19th century, the natural organic dye carmine was one of the most important materials for dyeing textiles. With the beginning of the Spanish colonization of the Americas in the 16th century, cochineal began to be exported to Europe, where it was widely used and highly valued. The main constituents of the small cochineal insect, commonly called lice, are carminic acid, kermesic acid and laccainic acid D. The insects remain immobile on the Optunia cacti they invade and nourish the plant sap. The small parasites are brushed off the plants several times a year and then dried. Cochineal comes from the Canary Islands.
